Email us anytime at [email protected] I was dx in August with Lupus and my Rheumy said she was afraid to start me on Plaquenil since I had a bad reaction to a Sulfa antibiotic I took and the same reaction when a Dr gave me Lasix. I think I'm going to tell my Rheumy that I at least want to try Plaquenil and take the risk (I only got a really red rash that looked like measles when I had the reaction).thanks, Robin I have a sulfa allergy, and have taken Plaquenil for 4 years without any adverse effects.

If you are taking hydroxychloroquine for a long period of time, your doctor will recommend frequent eye exams. It is very important that you keep these appointments. Hydroxychloroquine can cause serious vision problems. If you experience any changes in vision, stop taking hydroxychloroquine and call your doctor immediately. Plaquenil can damage the retina of the eye. This can lead to blindness. This problem is most common when high doses are taken for a long time. If you will be taking Plaquenil for a while, it is recommended to have a thorough eye exam before starting it and every three months while taking it. Oct 21, 2015 sulfate and sulfa are two different things. what you are allergic to is sulfonamides like bactrim, right? These are not sulfates. Sulfate used after a drug name is just the last name of the chemical, its the sulfate salt. It has nothing to do with sulfonamides.

Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had. I read that the sulfa in Plaquenil is different from those in antibiotics and most people with Lupus have an allergy to Sulfa but can take Plaquenil without any problems. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies.
